First, Out of Town News and now Crate & Barrel announces it will also close its store in Harvard Square and its significant modernist building may be the reason.
Building owner and Harvard professor emeritus Bill J. Poorvu and Harvard Square Business Association executive director Denise A. Jillson both expressed similar thoughts, saying the closing was likely driven by changes in the company’s merchandising strategy. “They’re basically more involved with furniture and furnishing now, as opposed to glasses and cookware that they were more involved in years ago,” Poorvu said. “They need bigger stores with one floor. This was something that’s been coming for some time.”
