Some commentators are pleased that the Out of Town News site will continue to be a news stand. It's too bad that something more relevant or exciting won't be using the space.
A coffee shop or some third space would be better than the nostalgic fantasy of the news stand in an age of ubiquitous information from newspapers and others online.
It seems likely that there will be a similar "crisis" when the next tenant decides to shut down.

Right. The Square really needs another trendy coffee shop. Not. I'd take a news stand any day over, what, Starbucks # 1,244? Do you remember the Square from years ago? It had many shops that sold things that people actually needed. And you lament the lack of "relevant and exciting". Newspapers may be antique to you friend, but many of us - yes, even young people - enjoy the experience of handling them and reading from them. Ever hold an old newspaper in your hands? It's a concrete link to history. The look, the feel, even the smell. Try framing your laptop or passing your hard drive down to your descendants. It wouldn't be the same at all. Newspapers aren't irrelevant, but the hip, trendy world which you apparently love and envision often is.
